Adam Phillips 7 November 2024

Young athlete Megan Thyer from Llanelli secured Great Britain's first-ever win at the JJIF World Championship — a milestone for Team GB Youths and a sign of things to come.
Today marks an incredible moment for Team GB Youths. Megan Thyer, a young athlete from Llanelli, South Wales, clinched Great Britain's first-ever win at the JJIF World Championship. Competing on the global stage, Megan displayed exceptional skill, determination, and resilience — setting an inspiring example for the entire squad.
Megan's campaign began early in the morning against tough opposition right out of the gate. Her first opponent, from Greece, narrowly edged her out, sending Megan into the repechage where she would compete for bronze. In her next match she faced an Italian competitor — and this time, Megan was completely in control. With brilliant technique and composure, she secured a well-deserved victory: Team GB Youths' very first win at this level.
Next, Megan faced a formidable athlete from the Independent Nations. The opponent was strong and tenacious, and while Megan gave everything she had, she ultimately came up short. Yet through every match, Megan gained invaluable experience and insight — fuel that will only sharpen her competitive edge for the future.
A Family Effort
This journey wouldn't have been possible without the incredible support of Megan's parents, Kath and Chris Thyer. Chris, who doubles as both Megan's coach and father, has been a guiding force throughout — offering vital strategies and encouragement at every turn. Kath, too, was there every step of the way, ensuring Megan had the strength and stability to take on the world stage.
Rising to the Challenge
The World Championship adventure taught the squad so much — from handling last-minute adjustments to preparing for unforeseen challenges. An unexpected weight category issue meant Megan had to compete in a higher division, a tough call that required both courage and adaptability. Despite the setback, Megan gained critical experience that will only benefit her next year, when she'll enter as one of the oldest in her category.
Paving the Way
Today, Megan took her first steps onto a larger stage, proving her strength and paving the way for others on Team GB Youths. We're proud of her accomplishment and even more excited for what lies ahead.
To anyone with the bravery to do what Megan did — standing on that stage and pushing your limits — we applaud you. And for those on the fence, remember: courage begins with that first step onto the mat.
