Michael 'Mad-Dog' McGarry is the founder and chief instructor of Kyouken MMA & Jujitsu. He is a 8th Dan Coral Belt in Japanese Jujitsu and a Black Belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. He has taught hundreds of students over nearly 20 years and has produced numerous champions, including Liam McGeary (Bellator Light Heavyweight Champ), Mike 'Gip' Cutting (3 x WCJJO World Champion), Alexei 'Boom' Roberts (Bamma, Into The Cage champ), Adam Phillips (4 x AMA National Gold Medallist, 3 x WCJJO silver medallist and 1 x JJIF World Champion), and Jessi McGarry (WCJJO World Champion). He also recruited Trevor Birmingham, who has won or medalled at almost every international IBJJF competition.

A long-standing Japanese Ju-Jitsu and self-defence club in Leigh, Greater Manchester, established in 1998. Headed by Sensei Alan Francis (6th Dan), who has taught his own adaptation of the WJJF Atemi Ju-Jitsu art for over 30 years — adding padwork and refining the art for real-world street practicality. The style, Atemi Ju-Jitsu ('atemi' meaning striking), covers blocks, strikes, throws and takedowns, joint locks, chokes and strangles, submission grappling (newaza) and weapons kata. Classes welcome men, women and children from age 5 upwards, with dedicated kids and adults sessions. Housed in the historic Back Findlay Street 'Self Defence Studio' — a building once used as a pub and long a martial arts training venue — the dojo has a matted training area, separate male/female changing rooms, a reception where parents can spectate, and toilet facilities. Just off Railway Road, 5 minutes' walk from Leigh bus station.

Sensei Alan Francis is the head coach and owner of Leigh Ju-Jitsu, holding the rank of 6th Dan. He began running his own Ju-Jitsu club in 1993 at King's Park Christian Centre, Atherton, before founding Leigh Ju-Jitsu at the Back Findlay Street dojo in 1998. For over 30 years he has taught his own adaptation of the WJJF Atemi Ju-Jitsu art he studied, introducing padwork and refining techniques to improve their practicality on the street. The adults' classes (Tue & Thu 8pm–9.30pm, £6) run alongside kids' classes (Wed 6pm–7.15pm & Fri 7.45pm–9pm, £5), with one-to-one private lessons available on request.

Shinka Jujitsu opened in July 2017. The name Shinka means 'to progress or evolve'. The club currently looks after around 40 members, most of whom have competed at the AMA Nationals in the past. Shinka runs several kids, children's, youths and adults classes and caters for all abilities. The chief, Dave McFarlene, is a GB Squad member who competed internationally in America (2019) and Australia (2017), and is currently graded at 2nd Dan, promoted by the head of the grading panel Shihan Ken Culshaw (ratified/recognised by the AMA).

Dave McFarlene is the chief of Shinka Jujitsu and a GB Squad member who competed internationally in America (2019) and Australia (2017). He is currently graded at 2nd Dan (2000), promoted by the head of the grading panel Shihan Ken Culshaw, ratified and recognised by the AMA. Dave's national competition career started in 1993, and he has won multiple medals including silver at the 1994 Sport Ju-Jitsu Grand Prix, two bronze and two gold for ground fighting between 1995 and 1999, one silver at the AMA Nationals, and one bronze at the WCJJO.

The Tatsu Dojo

The Tatsu Dojo is a well-being and martial arts centre based in Staffordshire, operated as part of Breathe UK Training — a community interest company established in 2013 with the support of the People Power Fund, Staffordshire Police and Staffordshire Moorlands District Council. The dojo opened its doors in January 2014 and has had over 1,200 people use the facilities since. Children's self-defence and Jujitsu classes have grown significantly, with students competing in the Nationals and a new generation of six black belts coming through. The dojo also runs fitness and well-being classes combining Jujitsu exercises with mainstream movements like kettlebells and Pilates, and was the first organisation to teach self-defence in mainstream schools in Staffordshire. Classes help with self-worth, anti-bullying, teamwork, fitness and general well-being, as well as being fun. From 5 years to 95 years old — all are welcome.

Sensei Tara Burndred is the owner and founder of The Tatsu Dojo, part of Breathe UK Training — a community interest company she set up in 2013. A 5th Dan Black Belt, Tara has been training since achieving her Junior Black Belt in 1984. She has represented Great Britain and England internationally, is a World Champion, and was the first to bring self-defence into mainstream schools in Staffordshire. She also tutors, mentors and teaches private individuals, with a passion for helping people with anti-bullying and self-confidence issues.
